Indoor navigation with UAV
The goal of the project is to develop such an autonomous drone that can navigate inside a building between two arbitrarily selected points accident free. Today indoor navigation is still an unsolved problem, thus our research attempts to solve it.
In the first phase of the research we create a 3D indoors map for the drones, which will serve as the base map when navigating. This is similar to outdoor Google Maps, which is used by millions of users every day. However, smart devices can use GPS and GLONASS signals to determine their exact location, these navigation services are not available indoors.
This problem can be eliminated with the help of sensors. We will use sensors that are available to anyone and are deemed ordinary, such as the accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer or other beacons. We have been exploring these sensors for 3 years, have analysed their operation and accuracy, resulting in having large amounts of information in the field.
According to our basic concept, the drones use the 3D map as a reference when navigating and planning the route; whilst airborne the sensors provide further assistance in accurate and efficient orientation.
