Monitoring the Quality of Agricultural Products by Applying the Knowledge about Fluorescence of Substance

 

The decreasing in agricultural products quality is associated with the changes in chemical such as the increasing of free fatty acid in rice bran affect rancidity etc. If the substance have ability in fluorescence; fluorochrome, it can be detected by using the knowledge about fluorescence of substance. The advantages of detection by fluorescence substance are high specificity and high sensitivity. Those advantages make the analyzing easy fast and save the sample.

 

Fluorescence of substance is occurred when the fluorochrome molecules absorb the light with the wavelength in UV-VIS (200 – 750 nanometers). Electron in molecules of fluorochorm will be stimulated by appropriate light wavelength that causes the change in energy level. Electrons from ground state are stimulated into a higher energy level and then release the energy level back into the ground state. Fluorescent light is emitted in the short time (10-7 – 10-9 second). The wavelength of light that emitted is mostly longer than the wavelength of light that is absorbed due to the loss of energy from collisions, vibration of atoms and energy transfer to the slurry.

 

Fluorescent substance can be analyzed by spectrofluorometer or fluorometer. The data about excitation wavelength and emission wavelength of fluorescent substance were obtained from spectrofluorometer or fluorometer software. This data will be used to design the machine vision for monitoring the quality of agricultural products on industrial scale further.
